Modernist art work

Lines: Waved, straight on the background, thick (lady’s back) and thin (hair)
Shape: geometric – background and round shapes on lady’s body, organic- other shapes.
Light- lady on the left is painting in light colors, her face is white, so we know that the light is reflected on her, her reflection in the mirror is darker, what’s mean that is less light.
Color- Picasso used all colors from color wheel- from light yellow, yellow, orange, yellow- green, green, green-blue, blue, blue-purple, and purple. He mixed the color especially that they are next to each other in color wheel- cool colors with cool, and worm with worm.
Texture- we can talk about visual texture, since we can’t touch it. I think the texture is rough, with a lot of edges (background, shape of a women), but in the mirror the texture will be smooth. The painting is made from oil on canvas,
Pattern- on the background- repeated motif, square with dot inside.
Balance- symmetrical, the left side is same as right, even though on the right side are darker colors, which is heavier, but we still feel that the art work is balanced.
Rhythm- shapes on the background has a rhythm.

Interpretation: In my opinion the painting “ Girl Before a Mirror” 1932 by Picasso shows a girl which see herself in a mirror different that she really is. She sees herself in dark colors, maybe she thinks about herself worse? Or maybe she has some problems in this time? In the mirror we can see a orange shape- I think that this is a tear, and her eyes in the reflection are really sad. But she touch the mirror and her reflection like wanted to say that everything will be Ok.

Judge: I found this painting in the internet. It caught my attention very fast. I think because of different colors, and clarity of the painting. We exactly see that this is girl and she is looking at the mirror, we don’t have to think what the artist wanted to show us.

Art 141

Hi,

Here is a photo from my other class - Introdustion to the visual art. I'm sorry for the quality of photo but it was taken by phone. We were learning about colors, so our job was to think of 3 personal symbols, and only 4 colors, and then paint it on canvas and see how the color are reacting together. Mine work is on the middle. It was fun. On Thursday I will try to show You onother photo, because project- Propaganda Poster is due.

Have a nice day!

Artwork that I created.

This painting is mine. I mean, I painted it, and even when I’m writing it I feel weird. I had never painted before. I don’t know how to draw. And all of a sudden I choose Introduction to the Visual Art as a one of my classes. I thought that we would read about lines or stuff like this and we are drawing, painting, doing everything what I thought that I can’t. After my assignment with this portrait I believed that everybody can be an artist.
The assignment was to paint on big board self-portrait by acrylic black and white paint. The teacher took picture of my head (look above) and then we had to make a grid. Same amount of squares we made on out photo. And fun had started. One by one we had to copy the values of gray on our board. We couldn’t just copy exactly how it is; we had to make different shapes, as many as possible. I was painting it around 12 hours. And I like it. I know that is not perfect, but is mine.
The technique was by Chuck Close. I saw many people buying a postcard “Alex” 1991, Chuck Close in the Art Institute. Here is a link to his page when You can some of see his works http://www.chuckclose.coe.uh.edu/life/gallery.html .

The picture with color painting of a child is by Chuck Close- Emma.
